Discover Your Passion and Live a Life You Love

passionPassion and purpose go hand in hand. When you discover your purpose, you will normally find its something your tremendously passionate about.
– S. Pavlina

Let’s say you’re feeling unmotivated, unsure of yourself, aimless, can’t find your passion, directionless, unclear on what your purpose in life is. You’re in good company — most people are in the same boat. So many of us walk through life, feeling numb and desperate for a deeper connection, but aren’t sure how to get it.
Finding your passion is definitely a search worth undergoing.

In her groundbreaking book, The How of Happiness, Positive psychologist Sonja Lyubomirsky wrote that only 10% of happiness comes from extrinsic incentives like money, fame, and status. This is an explanation as to why those that reach a certain income bracket, become celebrities or CEO’s still don’t feel content or complete if they are not aligned with their passion and purpose.

The two greatest days of your life are the day you were born, and the day you find out what your purpose is, but if you don’t know what your passions are then it can be hard to keep moving forward in a positive manner. Therefore, when people say, “What should I do with my life?” or “What is my life purpose?” what they’re actually asking is: “What can I do with my time that is important to me that I’m passionate about?”

I see people like Beyoncé and Justin Timberlake shine so brightly when they perform. They have an infectious passion, a thirsty love for life and an unyielding connection to their work. I struggled to figure out my purpose, but it wasn’t until I took a step back and realized that I can’t think my way into finding it. I have to take steps towards what I wanted, and remove those things in my life that were no longer serving me. I left my successful corporate job on a mission to find my version of “happy”, and it came by taking one step at a time and exploring many different passions.

Growing up an only child I always knew I wanted to create a large family of my own.  I also knew I wanted to generate a six figure income whilst raising my children. So my journey began looking for a career path that would allow me to have the best of both worlds. At 19 years of age, I went from broke psychology student to being a six-figure business owner of a modeling agency and event management company within 12 months. The money was fantatic but there was no love. Then I jumped into business and marketing, fitness, teaching and building. I quickly realized you can be good at different areas but you need to have passion in order to be the greatest in your field.

When I took the time to listen, my inner monologue sounded something like this:
“You know you’re not doing what you love. Your life lacks a deeper meaning, and you have no idea what you’re really passionate about. What in the world are you doing with your life?”

Apart from having the most rewarding job in the world of being a mum, I still wanted to do more, but I had no idea which path I wanted to take. I felt confused, stuck, and worst of all, embarrassed by my lack of direction. Finally, I was brutally honest with myself about my unhappiness and I embarked on some serious soul-searching. I asked myself tough questions and learned what it felt like to be authentically me. I discovered that my unhappiness was rooted in my lack of passion for the projects I worked on and I slowly began taking control.

I went through a series of thought process changes and dug deep to get clear on where I wanted my life to go. I am now proud to say I work 8 hours a week in a business that I adore that makes a difference to others lives. My heart smiles because I am able to spend quality time with my 3 young children, family and loved ones. I have set up my lifestyle in a way that allows me to have the freedom of choices to do what I truly want because I found my passions, that led me to my purpose and I’ve never been happier. Plus when your passionate about what you’re doing eventually the dollars roll in too so it definitely feels like I’m in a win-win position everyday.

But that doesn’t mean everything fell into place perfectly. Even though I had previously built many successful businesses in the past, I was still scared. I didn’t know if I would be able to support myself financially or if my business would be sustainable. I feared judgment from those around me saying, “Here we go again, she can never stick to one thing”.

It is terrifying when you feel like your life has no purpose or direction, but finding your passion can change all that. It’s like finding your personal road map. When you know what your passion is, you feel motivated, inspired, and so much clearer about what your next step should be.

Without passion you have no energy, without energy you have nothing – Donald Trump

Imagine this instead: you get up early, jumping out of bed, excited to go to work. You might put in more hours than the average person, but it doesn’t seem difficult to you, because your work hours just fly by. You are often in that state of mind often referred to as “flow,” where you can lose track of the world and time, losing yourself in the task at hand. Work is not work as many people refer to it, but something that is fun and interesting and exciting. It’s not a “job” but a passion.

The Tools For Your Journey

After some research, I have put together a series of ideas to help you figure out for yourself what is important to you and what can add more passion and meaning to your life. Before any great adventure, you want to make sure your tools and supplies are in working order. For this quest the tools are simple: You’ll need a pen and piece of paper, a working memory, and the drive to uncover what you set out to find. That’s it—you’re ready to set off. If you are looking for your purpose and passion, stop looking and start doing.

1.    Lead With Your Heart and follow your curiosity

Your heart is your best tool to access your true purpose and passion. Ask yourself what you love? Start taking steps to do what you love. When you are inspired and connected to your happy self, inspiration floods your heart and soul. When you lead from your heart, you are naturally more joyful and motivated to explore.
Also, bring your heart to your work. It takes passion and courage to find a profession that you love. Spending the time to discover that job is time well spent—it could make all the difference in your life! If you don’t think you’re in the job you were born to do, there’s no time like the present to gain insights into what brings you the most joy.
