Hacia Atherton Shares Some Tips On Navigating Your Own Unique Path

Navigating Your Own Unique Path To Becoming A Strong Female Leader

When it comes to becoming a female leader, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed or intimidated by the thought of breaking through barriers and rising to the top and a courageous mindset is needed. While there may not be a one-size-fits-all formula for success, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of strategies and approaches that can help you create your own path to leadership greatness. Whether you’re just starting out in your career or you’ve been working towards leadership for a while, there’s always room to grow, learn, and explore new paths to success.

For me personally one of the keys to becoming a strong female leader was I had a clear sense of my goals and I developed a strong personal brand. I thought about two critical questions;

What Type Of Leader Do You Want To Be?

What Values And Principles Are Important To You?

By gaining a deeper understanding of my own strengths and weaknesses, I could develop a clear roadmap for achieving my leadership goals. Whether you’re drawn to management, entrepreneurship, or a more specialised area of expertise, it’s important to identify the path that resonates most with your unique personality and passions.

My Transformational Moment

One of the most transformative experiences for me was to seek out mentorship and guidance from others who have walked a similar path. Whether you connect with other professionals in your field, join a women’s leadership group, or seek out one-on-one mentorship from experienced leaders, having a supportive network can provide invaluable guidance and inspiration along the way. Additionally, I regularly attend conferences, seminars, and other professional development events to ensure I stay up-to-date on the latest industry trends and best practices.

Another important aspect of becoming a strong female leader is to cultivate your own leadership style. This means developing your communication skills, learning how to delegate effectively, and honing your ability to inspire and motivate others. Building a strong team is crucial for success, but it also requires a significant investment of time and energy. As you build your leadership skills, don’t be afraid to ask for feedback from colleagues and team members to help you stay on track and continue to grow.

Overcoming Obstacles

As you navigate your path to becoming a strong female leader, it’s important to remember that there will be obstacles and challenges along the way. Whether it’s dealing with difficult colleagues, facing rejection, or struggling to balance work and personal responsibilities, these trials are an opportunity for growth and development. This moment can create high levels of fear, fear of the unknown or fear of rejection. What helped me through these moments is to remember we have all experienced fear at some point in our lives, but what sets successful people apart is their ability to overcome that fear and cultivate a courageous mindset. Having a courageous mindset is crucial not just for achieving success, but for leading a fulfilling life. By approaching your challenges with resilience and determination, you can build the skills and confidence you need to overcome any obstacle.

Developing A Courageous Mindset

Developing a courageous mindset takes time and effort, but it can be done with a few key strategies. Surround yourself with supportive people who will encourage you to take risks and pursue your goals. Set achievable goals and break them down into smaller steps to make them more manageable. Practicing mindfulness or meditation can also help to reduce anxiety and increase your ability to focus and stay calm in the face of adversity.

Take Control Of Your Destiny

There’s no denying that the path to becoming a strong female leader can be challenging and complex. However, by taking a proactive approach to your own development, seeking support and guidance from others, and leaning into your own unique strengths and passions, you can create a clear path towards success. Ultimately, being a great leader is about staying true to your own values and goals, committing to ongoing learning and growth, and positively impacting the world around you through your work and your leadership. Ultimately, it takes courage, determination, and a willingness to blaze your own trail to succeed as a female leader.

Hacia Atherton is the Founder of Empowered Women in Trades (EWIT), a charity established in 2020 to increase female representation in skilled trades in Australia through work experience, educational training and ongoing support.

Hacia hails from a family of skilled tradesmen and has encountered first-hand the challenges women experience in this sector after discovering women only account for 3% of trades in Australia. She established EWIT to inspire women to see trades as a viable and lucrative career option and to ignite societal cultural change geared towards creating a supportive environment for these women to thrive.

Hacia is no stranger to overcoming adversity having learned to walk again after a tragic horse riding accident in 2017 left her in a wheelchair for 12 months. She overcame debilitating and chronic pain and the doctor’s prognosis that she will never walk unaided again to achieve her CPA from her hospital bed, riding 100km twice for charity and running multiple half-marathons.

As a result, Hacia is invited to speak regularly on mental toughness, redefining success and courage with well-known brands such as the CPA, Honda, Ladies in Finance+ Time, Girls with Hammers, League of Extraordinary Women and Deakin University.
