Nikita Thakrar: A Letter to My Younger Self
Dear Younger Me,
If I could sit down with you now, there are a few things I’d tell you…
I see you sitting in the school library by yourself writing poems alone, because nobody wants to play with you. I see you feeling out of place everywhere you go and as though you don’t belong. But I promise you, that life will not always be like this. In fact, one day you will be on the other side.
From a shy, timid child you will become a confident, empowered woman. Despite all that you go through, you will preserve and remain strong. You will defy the odds and walk the road less travelled and then you will inspire others to do the same…
You will strive and succeed even though life isn’t always going to be fair to you. I want you to know that I am so proud of the person you will become. I only wish you would believe in yourself. I wish you knew how gifted you are and how much you will go on to help others. Perhaps then you wouldn’t doubt yourself so much.
The truth is you never needed to doubt yourself. You have always been destined for greatness, but others around you tried to dim your light. You weren’t seen for who you are, and that’s why you felt unaccepted by your society and community. Yet despite this, you still you pushed yourself beyond limits.
You navigated an unconventional career path and turned a niche service into a national brand. Your entrepreneurship and creativity are the driving force behind your success. I wish I could tell you to dream big and never stop dreaming.
Even during your health scare, you were determined and never allowed yourself to give up even when your body turned against you. This is the quality of a soul who’s on Earth for a reason. You live with purpose and inspire others to live with their purpose too.
Those friends who turned against you only did so because they couldn’t handle your light. You triggered them and so instead of being inspired, they cut you off. All this time you thought there was something wrong with you, but I want you to know that you have always been enough.
When you were slim you wanted to be slimmer. When your hair was straight, you wanted it to be curly. None of that matters now, I wish I could tell you to be present and enjoy each moment. Striving for more or wishing you were someone else is really not necessary. It’s more important to love yourself as you are – your flaws and quirks are all part of you, don’t push them away.
A day will come when you look back and realise it’s not about how many nice cars you drove, how much nice food you ate or the fanciest hotels you stayed at. I know you think it is, but it really isn’t. What’s more important are those small, spontaneous moments of joy when your soul feels free and at peace.
The biggest advice I can give you is to not strive for success or even joy but instead to strive for peace. When you are truly at peace with yourself, everything else can and will follow. Be proud of yourself, don’t seek validation from anyone else.
I celebrate you; I honour you, and I love you. All that you were, all that you are all that you will go on to become. I wish for every girl and woman to believe in herself, so that in a world of darkness. she can shine her light bright.
Nikita
