Sharron Keogh Shares Some Tips For Caring For The Immune System

What Is The Immune System?

The immune system is what helps your body actively fight off and create a resistance to illness and dis-ease.  It comprises of white blood cells, antibodies, the lymphatic system, the thymus and the bone marrow.

  1. Having a Healthy Lifestyle

Not only will your immune system function well but so will your entire body due to less inflammation.  When we are healthy, we are better able to fight off illness and dis-ease.  When we are unhealthy, the body has many assaults attacking the various body systems which can adversely affect the immune systems ability to function.

So A Healthy Lifestyle Can Include:

  • Eating a diet high in fruits and vegetables;
  • Limiting processed foods that contain little to no nutrients and are high in sugar which are highly inflammatory;
  • Moving your body regularly using a form of exercise that YOU love;
  • Drinking at least 2 litres of water daily;
  • Avoiding smoking; and
  • Limiting your alcohol consumption
  1. Boost Your Vitamin C levels

Humans cannot store Vitamin C in the body and hence we need to consume Vitamin C daily to ensure we have enough for our body to thrive.  Vitamin C plays an important role in maintaining good energy levels, our immune system to function in fighting against illness and dis-ease, having radiant and glowing skin, absorption of iron in the body, supports the bodies tissues and so much more!

  1. Get A Good Night Sleep

People can often underestimate the benefits of good quality sleep.  Sleep as a proactive measure for our health can play a factor in having strong immunity, good digestion, balanced hormones, muscles being able to rest and repair, mental clarity, and our emotional health.

Also, if our immune system is compromised and we are unwell, we have less energy and therefore, we need to rest more.  So getting good quality sleep can not only only maintain our health but can also support our health when we are not feeling our best.

  1. Reduce Your Stress

When we are stressed our immune system can weaken and therefore, it’s ability to fight off illness and dis-ease is diminished.  Taking steps to manage our stress levels in our daily lives will not only support the immune system but it will also support our nervous system, our cortisol levels (the stress hormone), our weight (because when cortisol rises we tend to put on extra weight around our bellies) and our hormone levels in general.

When we are able focus on managing our stress levels, our mental and emotional health becomes more balanced and in time, our biochemical functions do as well.  Whether it be reducing what’s on your plate, to increasing your mindfulness practice through to grounding yourself in nature; every little step you take to reducing your stress your immune system will thank you!

  1. Good Hygiene

If the last 2 years haven’t been a good reminder for you then I don’t know what is!  When our immune system is diminished we are more likely to contract an illness or dis-ease.  So by maintaining good hygiene such as washing our hands it can prevent the spread of germs from us to others and also from us potentially catching anything nasty from others.

Your body can only be as healthy as much as your mental and emotional health is!

So, I would love to know what is one action you will take today to help support and care for your immune system and overall health and wellbeing?
