Lauren Clemett Says Building Your Business is Just Like Building A Body

When you think about building a successful business, what comes to mind? Is it the late nights, the strategies that need to be turned into action, the endless emails or client demands? Or is it something more tangible, more physical?

For me, the journey of building a business has been a lot like the journey of building my body. It’s definitely been a process of putting in the reps, taking every step (even when I didn’t want to), and understanding that true strength is built from within.

The Reps That Count

In bodybuilding, you don’t get stronger by lifting the same weight every day. You have to push yourself – adding more reps, increasing the weight, or trying a new exercise completely.

It’s the same for your business, it’s the ‘reps’ are daily actions you take like sending that difficult email, making a cold call, or sharing a post about a new service and hoping you’ll get a good response. The thing is, each small and seeingly inconsequential step that takes effort also builds the muscle of your brand. It’s not about going all in on one massive effort, it’s about showing up consistently and pushing your limits just a little bit more each day.

When you’re an entrepreneur, it’s easy to get lost in the overwhelming thought of the big wins. We focus on the gold trophy, the seven-figure revenue, growing the team, the global recognition. But what if we shifted our focus away from the glitzy wins to have a rose gold mindset?

Embracing the Rose Gold Mindset

I’m a bodybuilder and an awards writing expert and I’ve seen countless trophies. They’re often gold, symbolising the pinnacle of success. But in my world, success isn’t just about the final win. It’s about the journey. The rose gold mindset is about celebrating every single step you take towards your goals, not just the massive milestones. It was actually at pickleball that I first heard someone call their bronze medal a ‘rose gold’ and that really struck a chord with me.

Think about it: every client win, every successful pitch, every problem solved is a piece of rose gold. These are the moments that build the foundation of your success. It’s about being proud of the small victories – the pitch you nailed, the client you delighted, the day you managed to get everything done without feeling completely burnt out.

Celebrating these small wins helps you stay motivated and reminds you that your progress is real, even when it feels slow. It keeps you from getting bogged down by imposter syndrome, that little voice in your head that whispers you’re not worthy. It’s this nagging self doubt that often holds us back from even trying.

The Power of Being Audacious

The word audacious means a willingness to take bold risks and for women in business, being bold is not something we’ve been encouraged to do. The world tells us to be polite, to wait our turn, to not be too loud or too much. But to truly succeed, we have to be audacious. We have to be willing to stand out, to be seen, and to claim the recognition we deserve.

Being audacious isn’t about being loud or aggressive. It’s about being confident in your worth. It’s about putting yourself forward for that award, even if you’re not sure you’ll win. It’s about confidently raising your prices, knowing the value you provide. It’s about sharing your story, flaws and all, because you know it will inspire others.

Like building a powerful physique, building an audacious brand takes courage and consistency. It’s about pushing past discomfort and silencing the ‘itty-bitty committee’ of self-doubt. You must put in the effort to be seen, to show your strengths, and believe in your natural skills and abilities.

So, how do you define success? Is it the big, shiny trophy, or is it the collection of rose gold wins you’ve gathered along the way? Do you shy away from recognition or are you ready to show the world what you’ve got?
