Sami Blackford – Natural Summer Skincare Advice

Tips On A Daily Summer Skincare Routine

Sami says: “Knowing how to layer your morning skincare products effectively during the summer will ensure sure you get the most from your daily routine. I recommend starting with a cleanse and tone to thoroughly clean the skin, create balance and to add that first layer of moisture. It also fully preps the skin for the next products to be applied.

“Once this has been done, apply your serum. Allow this to soak in for a few minutes and, next, gently massage in your daily facial moisturiser. This is an important step in any layering routine as it seals the serum on your skin which makes it more effective.

“Lastly, add your sun protection. As sun cream sits on top of your skin and would stop the other products being absorbed, it should always be the last part of your morning routine.”

Tips To Avoid A Summer Acne Breakout

Sami says: “A heady mix of sugar – think ice-creams and holiday treats – sweat and sun cream can cause our skin to breakout in spots. If this sounds familiar, make sure you are eating a healthy, balanced diet and try using alternative sun screen methods.

“For example, sun creams without comedogenic ingredients, staying in the shade, covering up with cool linens and a wide -brimmed hat etc., whenever it is safe to do so. A jade gua sha board is a great way to boost lymphatic drainage and banish any toxins too, plus it works wonders alongside an anti-blemish serum to soothe angry spots.”

Tips If You’ve Been Burnt In The Sun

Sami says: “If you’ve been caught out by the sun, there are still some important ways you can help your skin. To start, drink plenty of water to hydrate your body from the inside-out and moisturise twice a day. In particular, look out for moisturisers which contain:

  • Jojoba oil –this mimics our skin’s natural oil so is great for replacing lost oil and moisture.
  • Grapeseed oil – is hypoallergenic and very gentle to the skin, while also being highly moisturising.
  • Rosehip seed oil –is effective for helping the skin cell regeneration process and is useful for repairing damaged skin.

Next, calm any inflammation by applying soothing products with ingredients like shea butter, lavender and calendula. Shea butter nourishes the skin with vitamins A, E and F – the latter of which is a fantastic skin rejuvenator. Lavender has a pronounced healing effect on burns too, working to reduce any swelling and promote the growth of new skin cells, while calendula is famous for helping with irritated skin.

It’s important to nourish the skin and replace the vitamins and nutrients that have been stripped from it as well. We can do this through our diet – think healthy, fresh and whole foods – in addition to the products we apply to our skin. All of the ingredients already mentioned will do this, but two extra superstars to look out for are – rose, which contains a complex array of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that moisturise and reduce redness, along with neroli which helps with the regeneration of skin cells and improves skin elasticity.

“The most important thing is to treat your skin gently and with tender loving care. It’s got a big job ahead of it and it’s about giving yourself the right tools to do so.”
